Copper and Maple – A Story of Shawnee history & land-based knowledge
November 6 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeTalon Silverhorn of the Eastern Shawnee Nation will share the history, culture and experiences of the Shawnee to the natural landscape. Talon is the current superintendent of the Great Council State Park near Xenia.
Join us for an hour long conversation on Shawnee history, culture, and connection to ancestral landscapes. Discover how the end of the last glacial maximum shaped life in the Pleistocene, leading tribal nations in the Great Lakes region to adapt to a warmer, greener world. Delve into how fundamental beliefs and social practices connected to natural cycles have guided the Shawnee’s environmental strategies, rooted in over 15,000 years of lived experience. This program highlights the intricate link between cultural fluidity, conservancy, and the necessity of adapting to the environment.
Hosted by The Friends of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and Ohio University Chillicothe.
