With all the current talk about environmental adverse impacts of modern pesticides, people often adopt a pastoral view that our forefathers had less problems dealing with toxins. In the 1880s, We will find out that a common pesticide was mercury chloride, though benzene (a known carcinogen) and even opiates were used for pest control in and around the home! Perhaps, things were better back then!
