Birdwatching 101
February 17 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
FreeHave you ever noticed a bird in your yard and wondered what kind it was? Do you or someone you know own a pair of binoculars that is just collecting dust?
Want to learn about a new hobby and contribute to the scientific research field?
Join us on Saturday, February 17th at Hopewell Mound Group for Birdwatching 101!
Birdwatching is a great way to get outside, appreciate nature, have fun and learn about our feathered friends! Join Ranger Hailey for an introduction to birdwatching talk at the Hopewell Mound Group picnic shelter followed by a 2-mile guided hike within the Hopewell Mound Group earthwork.
During the guided hike, you may also record the birds you see for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count citizen science project! The data you collect will help scientists learn and protect birds around the world! To learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count, visit www.birdcount.org
If you are not new to birdwatching but still want to join our hike and contribute to the bird count, feel free to meet us after the introduction to birdwatching talk at 9:30am at the Hopewell Mound Group picnic shelter located at 4731 Sulphur Lick Road, Chillicothe, OH 45601. We hope to see you there!
All participants please dress for the weather including any extra layers, raincoats, hats, gloves, and long pants, for your comfort.
Wear sturdy footwear for the 2.25-mile hike over flat grass and hilly dirt trail.
Don’t forget to bring your own gear! While binoculars and/or cameras are not required to birdwatch, they can enhance your experience since birds are often wary of people and keep their distance.
