FreeA Walk Through Time at Hopewell Mound Group
People 2,000 years ago traveled from all over to come to Ross County and the Scioto River valley. Some consider the area the Vatican or the Jerusalem of Eastern North America; a place to gather, make pilgrimages to, and bury your loved ones. No site exemplifies this more than Hopewell Mound Group. The biggest and baddest of all Hopewell sites covering over 110 acres, Hopewell Mound Group is the beating heart of the Hopewell culture.
Join our park ranger and cultural resource staff at the birthplace of American archeology for a 2-hour guided hike on October 23, 2021 at 9:30 AM. Come gather with us and travel through time along the earthwork trail for our final tour of the season.
This tour will be 2.5 miles in length and begins at the Hopewell Mound Group picnic shelter, 4731 Sulphur Lick Road, Chillicothe, OH 45601. Dress in layers for variable weather, wear good hiking shoes and bring water. Visitors will be standing and walking for extended periods of time on grass/gravel trails and will be outdoors the entire tour. In case of inclement weather this tour may be cancelled. CDC COVID guidelines will be in place.
Hopewell Mound Group is one of the six ancient earthworks preserved by Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. This event DOES NOT take place at the Mound City visitor center. If you have any questions or would like more information please call (740) 774-1126.
