Boots, Bobbins & Barnyard Buckaroos: Growing Up Country at the County Fair

There’s nothing quite like growing up in the country—where summer wasn’t complete without muddy boots, the smell of sawdust, and a full week at the county fair. For me, the fair wasn’t just an event on the calendar. It was the highlight of the year. It was where memories were made, friends became family, and hard work met reward.

I was a proud member of the Alma Barnyard Buckaroos 4-H Club, and let me tell you—we were all in. My summers were spent preparing sewing projects, raising rabbits, and getting ready for that big moment in the ring or on the stage. My brother showed hogs, so fair week was a full family affair, and our barn aisle was always a hub of activity (and a little friendly sibling rivalry).

Some of my favorite memories come from modeling my handmade outfits across the stage to be judged in front of the grandstands. Butterflies and all, I’d take a deep breath, straighten my skirt, and smile as I walked with pride—knowing every stitch in that outfit was mine.

My rabbits were just as ready for their time in the spotlight, even if they didn’t always appreciate their grooming sessions as much as I did. Between our projects, showings, and trying to keep our pens tidy, there was always something to do—and we loved every minute of it.

But the fair wasn’t the only place where I found joy. I was lucky enough to serve on the Junior Fair Board, where I got a behind-the-scenes look at what made the magic happen. I also spent summers as a 4-H camp counselor at Canter’s Cave, helping younger campers discover the same love for 4-H and the outdoors that had shaped me.

And the friends I made during those years? Many of them are still in my life today. Whether we were sweating through barn chores, running animals in the ring on sale night, staying up late at camp, or waiting nervously for judging results, those experiences bonded us for life.

Growing up country meant growing up with responsibility, resilience, and a whole lot of heart. The county fair taught me more than how to show an animal or hem a skirt—it taught me confidence, community, and the value of hard work.

And every summer, when the fair rolls back around, I can’t help but smile. Because deep down, I’ll always be that kid from the Barnyard Buckaroos—boots on, projects in hand, and heart full of fairground memories.
