If you haven’t been to Adena Mansion & Gardens before it is a must see. Adena Mansion & Gardens was the 2000-acre estate of Thomas Worthington, the sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state’s first United States Senators. The mansion house was completed in 1806-1807 and has been restored to look like it did when the Worthington family lived there, including many original Worthington family furnishes.
This beautiful home sits on the remaining 300 acres along side the five outbuildings and formal gardens. The beautiful view overlooks the inspiration for the Great Seal of the State of Ohio. Adena Mansion & Gardens is open for tours April – October on Wednesday – Saturday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and on Sunday from 12:00 – 5:00 pm. July is full of fun for the whole family.
July 2nd – 3rd they will be hosting a weekend of events to celebrate our nation’s independence! This event is the Fourth of July All American Weekend! The fun will begin on Saturday, July 2nd with a Red, White, and Blue Ice Cream Social in the barn from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. Bring a lawn chair or a picnic blanket. Sit back and relax while you listen to live music and enjoy the delicious homemade fruit cobblers and root beer floats. Admission to the grounds is charged and there will be additional cost for cobbler and floats.
The fun will continue on Sunday, July 3rd at 2:00 pm. They will be celebrating Independence Day the way they did two centuries ago. This Independence Day Celebration is a part of the 2016 Adult Lecture Series and will take place at the picnic pavilion. Activities will include readings of portions of the Declaration of Independence, patriotic poems, a presentation of the flag, a toast to George Washington and 21 gun salute by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard! There will be no charge to attend this lecture.
On July 9th Chillicothe artist, Skip Hathaway will be offering an art class for children of all ages. The class will begin at noon and all supplies will be provided. There is no charge to attend this event.
July 10th come out to Adena Mansion & Gardens to watch a vintage baseball game for the second consecutive year! Bring your blanket or lawn chair and join them on the grounds when the Adena Worthington’s challenge the Ohio Village Muffins, an 1860’s baseball team that plays the game by the 19th century rules, in an exhibition game of vintage baseball. The match will begin at 2:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public.
July 17th Adena Mansion & Gardens announces Living History Sundays which will take place this summer on June 19th, July 17th, and August 21st from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. Step back in time as the historic estate of Governor Thomas Worthington comes to life when costumed interpreters present living history demonstrations throughout the site. Visitors will witness a wide array of interpretive experiences throughout the site.
