Park Street Evening Encore Walking Tour, August 2020
August 16, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$5.00 โ $15.00If it was too hot to take my tour July 19th, here’s an encore that should be cooler.
Starting at 6pm August 16th, 2020, we’ll start at the 1918 “private garage ” at 250 Park Street, and take about an hour-and-a-half walk through the micro-industrial zone in and around the one-and-a-half block area – with workers’ houses much like Chillicothe’s Goosetown and Columbus’ German Village – between Mill Street and Water Street.
It will be $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $15 for families. Pay “at the door” with cash or check. This is limited to about 30 attendees for safety and practicality on the tour.
The industries on and near Park Street changed through time – and included a cooper shop, brewery, carriage factory, coal gas production and storage plant, the cityโs second water plant, slaughterhouse and pork packing plant, ice plant, electrical plant (taken over at gunpoint by Camp Sherman), sawmill and lumber yard, desk factory, cement block factory, bottling factory, ice cream factory, an early steam-powered flour mill (at the site of the YMCA, and the namesake of Mill Street),
dairy…and large storage garage at the start of the automotive era.
The Ohio Erie Canal served some of them from 1831 to 1907, as did a B&O railroad siding – and this excludes busy nearby West Water Street.
Also, an Underground Railroad sub-basement is under one of the houses, near the boomtown-fronted neighborhood store.
“A Step Back in Time” antique mall at 250 Park Street is unable to host us this time, but you can learn more at
