Sunrise Solstice Yoga
June 21, 2019 @ 6:00 am - 7:00 am
Join us on this longest day of the year to welcome the sun!
In the northern hemisphere, June 21 marks the transition from the short days of winter to the bright, long days of summer. Derived from two Latin words, the word solstice actually means “sun standing still.” A solstice occurs twice each year, when the movement of the sun’s path (as seen from Earth) comes to a stop before it reverses direction.
Many of the practices of yoga revolve around the sun, including, of course, Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar). This “saluting the sun” is about bowing to and taking in the fiery solar energy of the sun to wake up, get energized, and start the day. Class will be led by a teacher from Explorer Yoga. Beginners are welcome and various options for sun salutations will be demonstrated. Bring a yoga mat or towel and join us at sunrise at the Mound City Group Visitor Center.
