The German Heritage exhibit will present many artifacts and archival materials from the collections of the Historical Society relating to the lives and contributions of Germans in Ross County’s history.\nThis annual exhibit will be available for only one week after this day\, so make a point to see it.\nIn addition\, an exhibit of historic coverlets will high-light mostly Ross County weavers with a German heritage. DESCRIPTION:Ross County Historical Society\nFranklin House Open House \nChillicothe\, Ohio – September 14\, 2024 – 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.\nWe are pleased to announce that the Ross County Historical Society is having an Open House for the Franklin House Museum located at 80 S. Paint Street in Chillicothe\, Ohio. We have partnered with Ohio History Connection’s Ohio Open Doors\, a statewide biennial event designed to give building and landmark owners an opportunity to showcase their history and provide special tours for the community.\nDesigned by architect Frank Packard of Columbus\, Ohio\, the Franklin House was built for three siblings\, Elizabeth\, Charles and Marianne Franklin in 1907. All three lived in this house for the rest of their lives. Ms. Marianne Franklin remained in the house until her death in 1971 at the age of 92. She was a trustee of the Ross County Historical Society and made them one of the beneficiaries of her estate. In 1972\, Mrs. Estelle McKell\, a member of the Ross County Historical Society\, purchased the house and donated it to the Ross County Historical Society with the intent that it would be used to “recognize and publicize the pioneer women who contributed so greatly to developing Chillicothe and Ross County.”

DESCRIPTION:Author and native Ohioan Kathy Schulz will be reading from her new book\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio. Kathy Schulz is a retired college librarian (Wittenberg University). A native of NE Ohio\, she has deep roots in the state and degrees from three of its universities. She lived at two major Underground Railroad junctions and wants Americans to know that the Underground Railroad was mostly in Ohio and mostly above ground – not in tunnels. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Ross County Historical Society\, in conjunction with the Mound City Group of the Archaeological Society of Ohio (ASO) and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park\, will host its 7th annual Archaeology Day event on Saturday\, April 13\, 2024 from 10am to 2pm\, featuring more than 20 table top exhibits with a wide range of prehistoric artifacts\, fossils\, and rocks collected by the Mound City Group of the ASO.\nMany items from the Historical Society’s collections which are not currently on display will be exhibited – including mammoth and mastodon teeth\, geodes\, fossils\, minerals\, and a variety of locally-found prehistoric artifacts.\nNeed help identifying items you have found?
