SUMMARY:Copper and Maple - A Story of Shawnee history & land-based knowledge
DESCRIPTION:Talon Silverhorn of the Eastern Shawnee Nation will share the history\, culture and experiences of the Shawnee to the natural landscape. Talon is the current superintendent of the Great Council State Park near Xenia. \nJoin us for an hour long conversation on Shawnee history\, culture\, and connection to ancestral landscapes. Discover how the end of the last glacial maximum shaped life in the Pleistocene\, leading tribal nations in the Great Lakes region to adapt to a warmer\, greener world. Delve into how fundamental beliefs and social practices connected to natural cycles have guided the Shawnee’s environmental strategies\, rooted in over 15\,000 years of lived experience. This program highlights the intricate link between cultural fluidity\, conservancy\, and the necessity of adapting to the environment. \nHosted by The Friends of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and Ohio University Chillicothe.

SUMMARY:Trailblazing Women in Ohio Politics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Women’s History Month screening of Trailblazing Women in Ohio Politics\, followed by a panel discussion. The hour-long documentary film was produced by WBGU and examines the electoral achievements of Democratic and Republican women who have broken electoral barriers in Ohio. Greeted with skepticism by voters beginning in the 1960s\, each trailblazer overcame obstacles and sometimes hostility to get elected. Featured trailblazers include the first woman Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives\, the first African American woman lieutenant governor in all 50 states\, and the longest-serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. \nFollowing the screening a panel of trailblazing women of Chillicothe will discuss the film and the state of women in Ohio Politics. Panelists include Stacy Brooks\, Senior Judicial Attorney for the Ohio Supreme Court; Kristal Spetnagel\, Chillicothe City Auditor; Dr. Jean Kearney\, former Chillicothe City Council Member; Alicia Gray\, former Chillicothe City Council Member; Nancy King; former Chillicothe City Council Member\, and first woman to hold that office; Margaret Planton\, former Mayor of Chillicothe\, and first woman to hold that office.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Liberty Earthworks
DESCRIPTION:Anyone driving the roads of southeastern Ross County today cannot help but be impressed by the beautiful\, well-maintained farms which sprawl across the landscape toward the Scioto River as it flows along the huge\, forested sandstone ridge to its west. Few of us\, however\, realize that this same expanse was once dominated by a series of now-vanished prehistoric geometric earthen complexes which stretched for miles and stood as much as 8 feet tall in places.\n\n\n\nOf major importance among these was the Liberty Earthworks. Levelled by nearly 200 years of agricultural activity and modern development\, the Liberty Earthworks is no longer visible to the naked eye. However\, the story of this grand earthen complex provides many useful insights for understanding Ross County’s newly-inscribed World Heritage Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks.\n\nJoin local educator and researcher Gary Argabright as he discusses the features of this monumental earthen complex and the insights it provides into the amazing landscape created by the ancient Hopewell peoples in the early centuries of the modern era.
