SUMMARY:Monarch Tagging at Hopeton Earthworks
DESCRIPTION:Join Park Biologists and Park Rangers Sunday\, September 7th\, to help capture and tag monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus)! As part of the Monarch Watch program\, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is helping a nationwide effort to study the amazing migration monarchs undertake every fall. \nNets and free handouts will be provided about butterflies and other wildlife. Make sure to bring water\, sunscreen\, and running shoes- these butterflies are planning to migrate thousands of miles\, so will take you on a great chase at times. Expect to walk and/or run a lot! All participants will need to complete a volunteer form. \nPark staff and volunteers will demonstrate safe and proper techniques for capturing and handling these delicate winged marvels. Once a monarch is carefully captured\, they will receive a tag- which is a specially made sticker placed on their wings. Volunteers and scientists along the migration route throughout the country and Mexico can then easily observe the tag and thereby assist in tracking monarchs to their winter homes and back! \nAt Hopeton Earthworks\, we will be stationed under a tent near the native grasses. Rangers will be waiting to greet you near the entrance to help guide you to the sampling location. \nHopeton Earthworks is located at 990 Hopetown Road\, Chillicothe\, OH 45601. DESCRIPTION:Join the park this Sunday\, June 22\, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hopeton Earthworks (990 Hopetown Rd.\, Chillicothe\, OH) for a Ranger-Guided Tour of this awe-inspiring site. \nThis complex masterpiece of landscape architecture includes earthen monuments memorializing ancestral shrines\, and geometric enclosures aligned to the endless cycles of the Sun and Moon.  Around and under it all is an unseen archeological landscape marked by timber post circles\, craft workshops and everyday settlements. \nImportant reminders: \n\nTours are free\, open to the public\, and require no registration.\nEach tour lasts approximately 2 hours\, covering 2 miles of unpaved\, uneven terrain.\nPrepare for the elements—bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a hat.\nWear sturdy hiking shoes—flip-flops and open-toed shoes are not recommended.\nTours are best suited for ages 12 and up.\nThere are no restrooms at this park location.\n\nFor more information\, call the park at 740-774-1126
