Early Monumentality in the Southwest Baltic Sea Region. Around 3.800 calBC the first monumental buildings, built from erratic blocks and named “Megaliths” appeared in the landscape. They served as grave-monuments and became significant markers in the landscape. The appearance of the Megaliths falls together with the first traces of farming. With support from the German Research Foundation a priority program of six years duration has been launched in our to investigate the origins and formation of the early monumentality and possible social differentiation. In this presentation, the focus with be on the first appearance and the relation to late Mesolithic fisherman societies.

Dr. Friedrich Lueth is visiting Ohio from the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, leading an international team of researchers to complete a large-scale, high-resolution magnetic survey at Hopewell Mound Group and Seip Earthworks. Join us to learn about Dr. Lueth’s archaeological research in Germany, and stay tuned for updates on the team’s results in Ohio!
