RCHS: “Death of a Civil War Hero”

May 22, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Death of a Civil War Hero: The Final Days of Chillicothean Joshua Woodrow Sill, featuring historian and author Dan Masters of Perrysburg, Ohio.

Dan Masters has been actively engaged in Civil War research for 20 years and has written five books and a dozen articles on the subject. His latest book, “Army Life According to Arbaw,” is set for release this spring. His presentation will cover the final week of General Joshua Woodrow Sill’s life through the words of his staff and from the accounts of the men of his brigade. It will discuss in detail his demise on the battlefield of Stones River and chronicle the lengthy return of his body to his hometown of Chillicothe. It’s worth noting that Master’s great-great-great grandfather, James Morrow, a Civil War veteran of the 1st Ohio Cavalry, is buried not far from Sill in Grandview Cemetery. Many of us know about Sill and his death at the Battle of Stone’s river; now we have an opportunity to hear the complete story. (General Sill’s coat will be on display during the program.)
