Hopewell Culture: Historic Excavations and Web Accessibility
Presented by Carolyn Heitman. This is not a new story: The primary records (notes, photographs and artifacts) from nineteenth-century archaeological excavations are often difficult to reassemble and difficult for scholars and the general public to access. The mound complexes of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park were initially excavated in the mid-1800s followed by additional, significant excavations in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In this talk, I will recount some of that archaeological history and reveal a new set of research tools some colleagues and I have launched to expose the work of Warren K. Moorehead’s excavations at the Hopewell Mound Group.
