The niece of the only bachelor president is the subject of the fourth and final 2018 “First Ladies’ Roundtable”. David Tillis will speak on how Harriet Lane served as hostess for the 1857-1861 term of James Buchanan. Lane had an exciting life and was so popular both during and after her official tenure that is easily comparable to Dolley Madison of an earlier generation.

The First Ladies’ Roundtable is a recent feature at the Lucy House. Various speakers will encourage discussion on “First Ladies,” chiefly the wives of U.S. Presidents or Ohio Governors (although other women served as hostesses as well).
