Ross County Historical Society presents their Fall Speaker Series.

The Monuments Men: the Local Connection
Featuring Margaret Farmer Planton, Former Mayor of Chillicothe.

Did you know Chillicothe has a close link to the story portrayed in the recent motion picture The Monuments Men which chronicles how the allies sought to find and save pieces of valuable art and other culturally important items from theft and destruction by the Nazis during and after World War II? Former Chillicothe Mayor, Margaret Planton is the daughter of monuments man, Walter Farmer, who after the war was put in chargeĀ of the Wiesbaden, Germany art collection point where stolen artwork and artifacts were processed and prepared for return to their rightful owners. While there he met his future wife who worked as an assistant.

Margaret grew up in Cincinnati hearing her parents’ stories. In 1987, after moving to Chillicothe, she began to help edit her father’s memoirs – which were later published in 2000 – and traveled with him to Germany in 1996 where he was honored by the German government for his efforts. Please join us as Planton recounts her father’s (and mother’s) fascinating accounts that go beyond what is portrayed in the movie.
