Ross County Historical Society presents their Fall Speaker Series.

A Route of the Wilderness: Ohio’s Canal Era
Featuring David A. Neuhardt, Editor & Board Member of the Canal Society of Ohio, Yellow Springs.

The Ohio canal system was a very large, risky bet by Ohio’s early leaders to reverse a stagnant economy and literally bring Ohio out of the wilderness and into a prosperous farming and manufacturing future. Dave Neuhardt will discuss Ohio’s canal era and how it shaped our state and continues to affect us today, over 100 years after the system was mostly abandoned. His program will focus on Chillicothe and the Scioto Valley.

Neuhardt was born near the Miami & Erie Canal in Sidney, Ohio, and lived for many years just a block from the route of the canal through Dayton. He has been a trustee and officer of the Canal Society of Ohio for over 30 years, during which time he has led over a dozen bus tours of various sections of the Ohio canal system, including several tours in the Scioto Valley. He currently also serves as editor of the Canal Society’s quarterly newsletter.
