Earthwork Discoveries in Ross County

May 8, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

An update on new earthwork discoveries in Ross County from old aerial photos and new magnetic surveys.

Featuring Dr. Jarrod Burks, PhD, President, Heartland Earthworks Conservancy and Director of Archaeological Geophysical Survey, Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc., Columbus.

As you probably know, Chillicothe and the greater Ross County area were a hub of earthwork construction 1,600-2,100 years ago. The Hopewell and Adena constructed hundred of mounds and miles of earthen embankments spread across a few dozen sites with geometric-shaped enclosures, like Mound City, Hopewell Mound Group, and the Junction Group. There are so many earthworks in this part of Ohio that it hardly seems like more could even fit! And yet, much to our surprise, a number of new (previously unknown) earthwork sites have recently been discovered in old aerial photos.

Join us as renowned archaeologist Dr. Jarrod Burks explores these newly identified ancient earthwork sites and other newly discovered features from ongoing magnetic surveys. There is much yet to learn about Ross County’s ancient past.
