Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day

May 13, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park with your choice of two birding opportunities.

9am-10:00am Family Birding Walk at Mound City:

Enjoy a guided walk at Mound City with a birding expert along the 1.0 mile shaded nature trail that winds around the perimeter of the earthwork and along a stretch of the Scioto River. Learn birding basics and fun facts while taking in the songs of spring. This is a great walk for families. All ages welcome!  We will have some binoculars to share, but please bring your own if you have them.

Location: Meet at the Mound City Group Visitor Center, 16062 State Rte 104, Chillicothe, 45601.

9am-11:30am Grassland Bird Hike at Seip Earthworks Co-Sponsored with the Arc of Appalachia:

Seip Earthworks is an immense 2000 year old American Indian Ceremonial site managed in grassland by the national park service. It is renowned for its diversity of grassland song birds, including birds that are rare in Southern Ohio. We hope to see grasshopper sparrows, Henslow sparrows, dickcissesls, blue grosbeaks and if we are lucky, bobolinks. We will also enjoy many species found along the forest edge, such as orchard orioles, northern orioles, scarlet tanagers, summer tanagers, great crested flycatchers and many wood warblers both passing through and nesting. No experience necessary. Beginners will be coached in recognizing birds new to their world.

What to Bring: Binoculars are required to fully enjoy your experience and we recommend you bring a bird field guide if you have one. The hike will end right before lunch but you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy at the Seip Picnic area, or enjoy your lunch in nearby Bainbridge.

Location: Meet at Seip Earthworks on U.S. Rt. 50 near Paint Valley High School, 2.5 mi. east of Bainbridge, 5 miles west of Bourneville. NOTE: Route 50 is closed immediately to the east of Seip Earthwork, requiring extending drive time when approaching from the east. For more information about the detour, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/hocu and select the “ALERTS” tab.
