Archaeology Day 2017

Artifacts, Rocks, Geo-Facts & more!

Interested in learning more about Ohio’s prehistoric artifacts, rocks and fossils? Be sure to come to the Ross County Heritage Center for the Ross County Historical Society’s second annual Archaeology Day. The event will feature more than 20 table-top exhibits by members of the Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and the Ohio Department of Transportation. In addition, many items from the Historical Society’s collections not currently on exhibit will be on display, including locally-found prehistoric artifacts, geo-facts, fossils (including mammoth/mastodon teeth, vertebrae and tusks), plus minerals, rocks and geodes.

Have questions about items you have found? Bring them in and talk with experts in the field of archaeology – including Ohio archaeologist Dr. Jeb Bowen and others – who will be on hand to answer questions and perhaps help identify items from your own personal collection.

Other exhibit topic include:
• Local prehistoric flint sources with samples of various flint types
• The current status of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park’s efforts to create local World Heritage sites.
• Current archaeological investigations on the grounds where Camp Sherman once stood.

Admission to this event is free to the public and will include museum tours for anyone interested in seeing the Ross County Historical Society’s permanent archaeological exhibit.
