Hopewell Culture NHP is proud to be the coordinators for the Region 9 Ohio History Day! Now in our seventh year, we are pleased to host the 2018 Region 9 competition at the Chillicothe Middle School, Saturday February, 24. You can be involved too! Volunteer to judge and experience Ohio History Day for yourself. You do not have to be a professional historian to judge! If you live in any of the Region 9 counties (Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike, Ross, Scioto, or Vinton) consider joining us for the day and learning how this can become an amazing experience for students in your backyard!

Each year, hundreds of students across the state participate in National History Day in Ohio. National History Day in Ohio is a yearlong program where students choose a topic, tied to an annual theme, and create historical papers, dramatic performances, creative documentaries, museum-like exhibits and websites. Their projects are based in primary and secondary source research and reflect their analysis of the historical topic.

The 2018 National History Day theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” Regional competitions run throughout March. Students first participate in a region level contest, where they compete for the opportunity to move on to the state level contest.  Students in grades 6-12 will compete to earn scholarships, special awards and ultimately a chance to represent Ohio at the national event. For the many students who do not advance in the competition, the comments from judges could be the most important thing they take home.

The 2018 Region 9 event is on Saturday, February 24 at the Chillicothe Middle School. We are currently looking for willing individuals to serve in either of two volunteer roles: event assistants and project judges.
